GH7 vs $100,000 Arri Alexa on a REAL Production
I got a chance to put the LUMIX GH7 next to the Arri Alexa Mini LF to really see how good the ArriLog is.
And quite honestly, I’m impressed with the quality coming out of this camera. Is it a replacement for the Arri? Not in the slightest. But is it a tool to go hand in hand with one? Certainly.

Hollywood’s Secret To CLEAN Night Scenes
Great video!
This is what I value. Real practical use. Not renting the camera and filming your cat or backyard and making a review. Thanks
No mean to be harsh but this particular shot on iPhone film looks interesting only within the context of this video. It doesn't have any interesting story or plot twist or anything that actually makes the film interesting so if this film was uploaded alone as it is, it is not going to be so interesting. In another words, budget does matter for good script writing, copy writing and narrative. Budget is not only about the shooting itself.
second day in this channel and really love it ! Subscribed <3
GH7 looks sharper. Did you reduce sharpness on profile settings ?
Not 100% on that. It could be that I believe we had that at 6k
Love your video! It’s super helpful!! Do you use a gimbal ?
Greetings I'm Esteban from Puerto Rico I ask how he did the color correction in davinchi resolve and what codec he used when recording ProRes RAW?????
I just used a plugin called LookDesigner, and did it all through there! And ProRes 422 on GH7 and ProRes 4444 on Alexa
8:27 that escalator shot with the color grading is just chef's kiss. it looks like it came from a movie
I got the original s5 and the s5II ... Amazing colors, and the V-Log it's amazing, this gh7 seems to be really great! I coming from the 6DII from canon, really big differences!
The cult of having a 50 pound camera with 10 thousand accessories and team to build it is breaking. Thank god. I'm done sacrificing my body when I can shoot with small cameras and get the same image. Use a speedbooster crop factor is a non issue then.
BTW - PUA Mystery’s FINGERS?!?! Okay 😂😂😂
Yes thank you for the comparison, hopefully when your projects release you'll revisit and give us more details. I have a gh7 on preorder and think I'll keep it and definitely plan to get the arri log, given that other folks out there sell ARRI simulating luts for these camera, having something actually certified by arri is icing!
Lumix S5ii user here, you’re not wrong about the magenta shift! Always have to shift my image away from magenta when color matching to other cameras such as the fx3!
Lol and sonys have a green shift i always have to push it the other way
If you grade your footage you see that the GH7 does not compare to Arri or Red. Remember post flexibility is a form of insurance.
This! And no LUT is going to fix that
Throw on a PL speed booster and the GH7 is god tier. With 0.71x speed booster, you get an FOV slightly wider than super 35, plus you gain a stop of light. Not to mention all the PL lenses you get access to.
There are no PL speedbooster for the MFT that accept the wide variety of PL Lenses, The only one is made by Metabones and it only works with shallow Zeiss PL Lenses
LUMIX seems to be taking their main camera (S5iiX) and taking pieces away and replacing them with a gimmick like downloadable LUTs or ARRI log C3. It bothers me that people are falling for this. Putting Rosso Corsa paint on a chevy doesn't make it a Ferrari. A tiny, overpriced hybrid camera body with horrible dynamic range that uses tiny lenses cannot ever match a $100,000 cinema camera. Anyone pretending it can is crazy or trying to sell you a GH7. Also... what's the use case here? Somebody that owns both an ARRI and a gh7? Who does that? That's absurd. It's a useless feature that everyone is going on and on about.
Sooo, instead of renting an Alexa, just buy a GH7 with a couple more lights. Got it! 😆
Very cool!
Non-technical reviews are the best reviews. Pixel peeping is just silly, what matters is the end product and what people see on screen.
So what the point to shoot in 4K or 6K ?
That footage looks fire!!!🔥
Share your thoughts... How do you feel about utilizing as a B-Cam to the Arri a BM 6k FF or Ursa Mini Pro 12k? Arri Alexa 35 (Ursa 12k Oplf) Arri Alexa Mini (BM 6k FF) & when released of course the new Ursa Cine 12k FF
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
If you're going GH7 over RED, it's really saying something about this camera.
To even utter replace an Alexa. 🤣
Im si glad I didn’t just skip this video. I have watched soo many videos on white balance and none have been able to so simply explain white balance like you did. Thank you light master :)
BABE WAKE UP BRADY BESETTE UPLOADED
This makes me so happy
the in camera effect of the tiny talking head is on point here.
lol set my iPhone to 0.5 and let it rip
@@BradyBessette you should just keep making the effect stronger every video until more people say something. 💀 Fantastic content on this. That new camera is pretty sweet for the price, really makes me consider it over the fx3. I wonder if Sony is gonna finally step it up this year.
i see much more DR in the Arri... but this is to be espected
Great video man! I think the GH7 is just going to be another tool for us to be creative with
Not with those colors, your better option is to buy CineMatch which is $149 ($119 on sale) which is cheaper than the $200 Panasonic is asking for this "Arri LOGC3" LUT
Interesting to see this from a non-lab/tech example with real footage.
It looks good but the skin tones look different. Also, the DR limitation is pretty obvious on GH7.
true it's also 48,000 dollars cheaper
@@Castleromeo14there are plenty of other cameras around.
holy the footage actually looks nice
Thank my gaffer;)
M4/3 is all you gotta say when someone compares it to the Arri. Awesome video brother!
Yes this has so many advantages over the Arri, that compared to their relative prices, means the Arri is toast
@@foljs5858 I agree there's not even a conversation when it comes to young filmmakers owning an Arri. I wouldn't say they're toast as studios will always rent Arri's for big budget work. All I'm saying is the GH7 won't match it. It'll be close as Brady showcased , but we can't expect Arri visuals out of a budget M4/3. My first cam was a GH5 , I have no bad thoughts toward Panasonic, just M4/3. If you can, get a Super35 or Full frame for the same price. Also being a full time Panasonic shooter I know first hand how digital the look is. You need to grade it quite a lot, but if you know you're shit, you're set!
@@foljs5858 Why not just buy a Nikon Z6 and actually match the Arri?
Metabones speed booster and sigma 18-35 hmmm
Not me seeing this comment and ripping out my p4k kit again to steal the SB before LUMIX makes me send the camera back
@@BradyBessette ahahahah that's what wee dooo. Would love a 2nd video about it
If you don't have close to the budget for even one Alexa, at least you can get close to the look with the GH7. And it will probably be "good enough" in most cases.
True!
So now what I would look for in a camera is less about video quality and more about ease of use. Can you make a good, even cinematic video with a Canon 5D Mark II? Absolutely. But it will be a pain. You have to use manual focus. There's no in-body image stabilization, so forget about handheld shooting. The preamp is awful, so you might have to use an external audio recorder. There's also no headphone jack to monitor audio. The rolling shutter is atrocious, so forget about whip pans and maybe even tracking shots. There are no fast frame rates, so slow motion is out. The dynamic range is quite limited despite the full-frame sensor. And, of course, the image is soft, even by 1080p standards. The best thing about newer cameras like the GH7 is that they make it so much easier to get the shot you envision. You can be more spontaneous and flexible about how you film. You can travel with them very easily, and you might not even need a tripod!
@@danieldougan269 you forget magic lantern.
@@danieldougan269 You also forgot, most sets still use Focus pullers, Plus with the DJI Focus pro (Which goes on sale for $800) you can get top quality autofocus with a Full Frame to boot :)
! Always dope vibes and video bro ! I want to let people know that It's much easier to match footage to the camera you're emulating when you have the actual camera on hand. Those without an Alexa wouldn't know the precise adjustments needed from shot to shot ! GH7 is amazing though 💯🙏🏽
150% on this 🔥🔥
Oh you knowwww
Thank you so much for this video! Coming from the GH5 this is the first time I'm upgrading to a new camera. I've preordered the GH7. Great to see a pro like you, pushing the GH7 to he's limit. I liked the image quality from your footage! Quite impressive for a M43 2200 US dollar hybrid camera! Thank you and thanks to Panasonic Lumix!
Yeah it’s so impressive honestly! Thank you
First!! Haha!! It’s crazy how I was just talking with my friend about the conversation this camera has stirred. I ultimately think it’s who is behind the camera to make it look the best but definitely interesting to say the least.
just what i expected. It's not good enough
Exotic! 💖Do you have any color grading tut like you did on this video?
Funny, back in the day, pre 70s, a flare in the lens was a no-no and could get you fired...
